The Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship was established in 2006 with the goal of promoting the development of international student education in Shanghai and attracting exceptional international students and scholars to East China Normal University (ECNU). This fellowship is open to excellent overseas students interested in pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral studies at ECNU. Applicants to the undergraduate programme must have at least HSK-3 level Chinese proficiency, or they can choose a one-year pre-college programme (with a May 10 application deadline) to learn Mandarin with a full scholarship. If the candidate does not attain the required HSK level after finishing the pre-college programme, they will graduate as a language student.

Scholarship Benefits

  1. Type A (Full scholarship)
  2. Tuition and on-campus housing are waived; full medical insurance and monthly living expenses are provided (Doctoral program: CNY3500; Graduate program: CNY3000; Undergraduate program: CNY2500)
  3. Type B (Partial scholarship) (Partial scholarship)
  4. Tuition fees are waived, and complete medical insurance is provided.
Nationalities Eligible: This grant is accessible to foreign students.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health.

  3. Candidates for the pre-college programme must hold a high school diploma and be under the age of 23.
  4. Candidates must have a high school diploma and be under the age of 25.
  5. Candidates for the master's degree programme must have a bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35.
  6. Candidates for the doctorate degree programme must hold a master's degree and be under the age of 40.
  7. Students who have received the Chinese Government Scholarship or any other award granted by another organisation are not eligible to apply for the SGS.
