Description
Juniper encroachment has emerged as a defining challenge of rangeland conservation and is associated with major changes in the supply of goods and services provided by rangelands to people. In grasslands, woody encroachment results in reduced forage production by up to 75%, lost habitat for grassland wildlife species, increased wildfire danger, and potential impacts to freshwater supply among other changes. In North Dakota’s Badlands, juniper encroachment is taking over grasslands and juniper removal consequently become a key management focus on public and private lands.
We are seeking a highly motivated MS student to investigate forage production response to juniper removal in North Dakota’s Badlands. This position is based out of the School of Natural Resource Sciences (SNRS) at North Dakota State University and is funded through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and North Dakota Natural Resources Trust. The project’s focus is on understanding forage production outcomes of juniper management and communicating those outcomes to stakeholders through targeted outreach. The selected candidate will work as a member of a team comprised of graduate students, a postdoc, research specialists, and professors. The student will lead all components of their thesis research and will have flexibility to develop additional research questions. Fieldwork will be conducted throughout the summer near Medora, ND (housing provided for field season). The selected student will be expected to share their findings through extension activities, professional conferences, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong work ethic, valid driver’s license, be able to lift 50 lbs, walk > 2 miles over rough terrain, and have a Bachelors degree in a related field. Candidates will regularly interact with ranchers and conservation professionals and must be able to demonstrate professionalism and excellent communication skills. The most competitive applicants will have experience with plant ID, vegetation sampling in rangelands, and scientific writing. Evidence of written work may be requested during the interview process.
